Serving Outside MCC

Serving our community not only takes the love of Jesus to people in need, but it also changes us as we focus on others. Listed below are several organizations in the Wabash Valley looking for selfless people just like you. See which one is right for you!

1. Vigo County CASA

What: Be an advocate in the court system for abused or neglected kids in our community 

Where: Involves 30 hours of training at CASA offices before being matched up

When: After training, requires about 5 hours a month but need to have flexible schedule for court appearances and other appts as needed

Why: Proverbs 31:8-9 – “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly;  defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

2. Crisis Pregnancy Center

What: Earn While You Learn…. A program where a woman is matched with a young lady who needs a friend and confidante 

Where: CPC is located at 1527 Poplar St.

When: Meet with your match once a week in time that works for both schedules

Why: Young ladies at CPC need help with basic parenting questions and the support of someone who believes in them and can provide encouragement

3. Educational—Family Services

What: Tutor students after school OR train older students for GED 

Where: Tutoring is 1-on-1 on the campus of St. Mary of the Woods

When: About 90 minutes a week

Why: Help with the education of young people and those that are trying to advance themselves by getting a GED.

4. Kids Hope / Big Brother Big Sister

What: Mentoring program for at risk kids 

Where: Kids Hope is at Davis Park Elementary and done through the school system.
BBBS would connect you with the family and pick up the child from home

When: Meet with your match once a week. Difference is KH usually during weekday lunch hour at school, while BBBS is more flexible to fit schedules

Why: These kids need positive role models(especially men!)who care and believe in them

Call one of the contacts to get started. You’ll need to fill out an application, have references and a training session. You will then have a short orientation where you are matched with a child.

5. Life Connections Program

What: Men needed to mentor male prisoners who are in the federal prison 

Where: Federal Prison in Terre Haute

When: Once a month on Monday nights from 5:30 to 7:30p

Why: Help guide prisoners both on their faith and life journeys as they prepare to re-enter society

6. Meals on Wheels

What: Provides home delivered meals services to people in need 

Where: Two locations as you can deliver on the North or South side of Terre Haute

When: About an hour starting at 10:30a or 11a but can go either weekly or monthly

Why: Help fight hunger for seniors but also build relationships and show them love as you visit them on a regular basis

7. Southern Care Visiting

What: Volunteers can do a wide range of things for our patients. Such as read the bible, sing, work on scrap books with our patients, take them for a walk, do light house keeping, make them a light meal, assist in planting a garden for them, crafts, respite or simply stopping in for a friendly visit. 

Where: Make visits to long-term carefacilities located or help with care giver relief in homes

When: Only a minimum of 30 minutes a week with flexible schedule

Why: Brighten the day of someone simply by visiting, listening and showing that you care.
